I pretty much have tried everything to become pregnant. You name it, I've done it. From natural therapies to serious medical interventions, "I've been there, done that!" It may be helpful to read my prior post about miscarriage.
Acupuncture, fertility yoga, fertility meditations, fertility diets (including smoothies, Paleo, eating for your cycle, real food diet, etc), supplements, mindfulness, weird sexual positions, Orgasmic Meditation (OM), naturopathy, integrative medicine (or functional medicine), talk therapy, chinese medicine, IUI's, IVF's, etc. etc. etc.
A good friend from Canada had mentioned Osteopathic Medicine to me awhile ago. At the time, I added it to my mental list of things to try, had looked around online, but was hesitant to go see a random person that wasn't recommended to me. I also really didn't know exactly what it was all about.
Fast forward to more recently, I listened to a very interesting lecture on osteopathy for physical pain. I emailed this woman, told her a quick summary about my medical history, and she assured me that I should try osteopathy for fertility. She recommended a DO or doctor of osteopathy in NYC, who was extensively trained in Montreal, Canada. Perfect!
I've been doing some research on osteopathy and infertility. I came across this interesting thesis, that followed 10 women receiving osteopathy for infertility. 70% of the women became pregnant while receiving treatment (one of them got divorced during the treatment sessions, so I don't believe conception in her case was in the cards at that time.) This thesis also describes all the other amazing changes that these women had while receiving treatment, including improved digestion, improved pain, and decreased stress.
This case series from pubmed published in 2012 discusses that 6 of the 10 women in their study, who were treated with osteopathy became pregnant and all carried their babies to term.
I felt drawn towards osteopathy because I have had a long standing yoga injury in my left pelvis/hip/sacral area for a long time (prior to trying to conceive), that keeps coming and going. I also recall a bad fall that I had directly on my tailbone when I was 10 years of age. The osteopath that I went to asked me if I had fallen on my tailbone as she examined me (before I told her.) On top of my poor digestion and random history of bladder issues, this seemed like the person to see.
At my first appointment, we went over my long medical history for quite awhile. She then did the physical assessment, where she palpated and felt my muscle/fascia tissue as well as bone/joint mobility. I even started crying while she was doing some craniosacral treatment. After my session, I felt pretty good and had some more mobility in my sacral area. The next day and the following 4-5 days, I was EXTREMELY sore. I called her and was assured that this sometimes happens. As my body has been healing from this last treatment, I have to say that overall I am feeling better. My neck feels amazing and I don't believe I even realized how tight it had been. She explained that the neck tightness has been restricting the vagus nerve, which is responsible for your parasympathetic nervous system. This helps to stimulate calmness and contentment. Since the vagus nerve is being restricted, my body is more often in the sympathetic state or feeling that I'm being chased by a tiger.
I don't see her for 2 more weeks, allowing my body to integrate all the treatment and heal. As a physical therapist myself, I am drawn to the importance of all the body structures working together and being in good alignment, for healing and body functions to take place without restrictions.
I am super excited about this new form of treatment for infertility. This along with everything else I am doing (some of them mentioned above), will hopefully lead me to the place I need to be in order for my body to happily conceive.
Have you tried osteopathic treatment for infertility?
I would love to hear from anyone that has. Email me at RealFoodAlways@gmail.com
Update: Since starting osteopathy, my low back/SI/hip pain has greatly improved and is often times not present (still have some healing to do here). My neck is amazing. I used to wake up with a "crick in my neck" every couple of months, but this has not been the case at all. I also notice a change in my emotional state (for the better.)
I came to acupuncturist Mississauga because I was suffering from neck pain due to a recent injury from a car. I was tired of taking medications and feeling drowsy and I didn't want physical therapy due to the lack of privacy.
ReplyDeleteHow has the acupuncture worked for you? It works great for some people. I actually love it, and did it for several years, but it didn't directly address some of the issues I have been dealing with.
ReplyDeleteI can understand that how hard it is to answer the people around you who are always looking you to be pregnant as they used to ask my wife as well and we had no answer but then one of my friend told me about Chiropractor North Ryde and we consulted and succeeded.
